Milner explains Villa exit

Manchester City midfielder James Milner says he left Aston Villa because he felt he would have little chance of winning trophies.

Fergie: Houllier should forget Owen

Villa have finished sixth in the Premier League in the last three seasons, but they have been unable to make the breakthrough into the top four and, while they reached the League Cup final last season, they were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United.

Martin O'Neill is believed to have quit the club before the start of the season because he was unhappy at the limit on his transfer funds, and Milner believes he would probably have ended up empty-handed had he stayed at Villa Park.

"Villa came very close to winning a trophy, they had a lot of good players but were just that tiny bit short of getting to the next level," he said.

"They needed to bring players in but it became clear from Randy Lerner that Villa might have to sell to buy. It made me think City had a better chance of progressing and challenging for trophies. I had a great time at Villa and improved as a player but City is a club going places very quickly."
