Given wants first-team football

Shay Given has revealed he is finding life on the bench "very, very frustrating" and says he is keen to secure a loan move in January.

Wigan vs Manchester City preview

Joe Hart has been made first-choice at City this season and, despite Roberto Mancini having previously suggested that he would rotate his goalkeepers for the Europa League, Given has yet to feature in the competition.

Given, 34, was linked with a switch to clubs including Fulham, Celtic and Arsenal during the summer window but was told he had to stay and fight for his place and, although he is not seeking a permanent move, he is desperate to start playing again.

"It's very, very frustrating," he told the Sunday Times. "I know it doesn't matter what I do on the training pitch - I won't be playing at the weekend. If I'm flying around like Clark Kent in goals, I still won't play on Saturday. That can be demoralising.

"The club said I wasn't going anywhere and that was frustrating. We'll see what happens come January and hopefully if the situation's the same I can go on loan and try and get some games in.

"I've never said I want to leave Man City. I believe it's a big club that in the next couple of years is going to do big things. I want to be part of that but I also want to be playing football.

"I wouldn't mind where a loan was and wouldn't rule out abroad if it was a good club and a good team, no disrespect to a club that's fighting relegation and getting pummelled every week - though at the minute that probably seems better than what I'm doing."

After City's 2-0 win at Wigan, Mancini admitted he understood the concerns of Given and said he could let him leave in January.

Mancini said: ''I have a lot of respect for Shay and I told him the situation before the finish of the [transfer] market. I told him. 'Shay, you can choose. I hope that you stay here but I respect your decision and if you want to leave you can.'

''He decided to stay here and until January he must stay here. I understand his frustration but I need that Shay stays here and puts in 100%. In January if he decides to leave I respect his decision.''
