Payet double puts St Etienne top

Dimitri Payet's double paved the way for a comfortable St Etienne 3-0 win over Montpellier to put them top of Ligue 1.

Payet and Emmanuel Riviere gave the home side a 2-0 half-time lead and Payet's second after the break ensured there was no way back for Montpellier.

Marseille put their stuttering start to the season behind them with a convincing victory over Arles. Winger Andre Ayew netted twice in a 3-0 success - only their second in six Ligue 1 games - which lifts Didier Deschamps' men up to seventh in the table.

Bruno Cheyrou opened the scoring in the 32nd minute and Ayew's double (37 and 54) condemned newly-promoted Arles to a sixth defeat in six games, leaving them rooted to the foot of the table.

Monaco held on in a 0-0 draw to claim a point against Toulouse, who relinquished their place at the top. Monaco started brightly but it was Toulouse who completely dominated the second half, and they should really have taken all three points.

Two goals inside the last 20 minutes gave Brest a 2-0 win and their second victory of the season and increased Nancy's misery at the Stade Marcel Picot. Late breakthroughs from Thomas Micola and Larsen Toure mean the home side have lost all three games on their artificial surface this season.

Abdoulrazak Boukari struck a minute from time to snatch a 1-1 draw for Lens at Valenciennes in Saturday's encounter. In a game of few chances, the hosts took the lead 10 minutes after the break thanks to a superb strike from Mamadou Samassa.

A second-half surge from Sochaux saw Nice sink without trace in as the hosts secured a 4-0 victory. Brown Ideye had given the hosts a deserved half-time lead and Ryad Boudebouz and Marvin Martin made victory safe before Modibo Maiga ensured the night finished with a flourish.

Youssef El Arabi's goal was enough for Caen to earn a 1-0 win away to Lorient. The goal came courtesy a quick counter-attack, with El Arabi converting from Ismaila N'Diaye's through ball.
