Gunners denied at the death, Spurs fight back

A last gasp goal from Darren Bent saw Sunderland get a point against ten-man Arsenal after the Gunners had taken a freak lead through Cesc Fabregas.

Fabregas chased down and blocked Anton Ferdinand's clearance, only to watch the rebound fly over Simon Mignolet from 30 yards. However, the impact appeared to strain the Spaniard's hamstring and he was replaced soon after.

Sunderland offered little in attack but, after Arsenal were reduced to ten men as Alex Song was sent off for a second yellow card and Tomas Rosicky blasted a penalty over the bar after a foul on Samir Nasri, Bent appeared with virtually the last kick of the game to hammer the ball home from close range.

Rafael van der Vaart netted his first goal for Tottenham as Harry Redknapp's side came from a goal down to beat Wolves 3-1.

For long spells it looked as if Tottenham would come down to earth with a bump following their first appearance in the Champions League as they trailed to close-range finish from Steven Fletcher. But Spurs, who were the best side for much of the day, levelled when Alan Hutton drew a foul in the area from Stephen Ward and Van der Vaart kept his cool to slot home from the spot.

Spurs had the bit between their teeth and Roman Pavlyuchenko climbed off the bench to fire in a second. It was a game of pinball as Wolves failed to clear their lines and the Russian collected a shot from Tom Huddlestone before turning the ball home. In injury time, Hutton added a third.

Hatem Ben Arfa announced himself in the Premier League with a stunning goal as Newcastle claimed a 1-0 win at Everton. The Magpies went to Goodison Park on the back of a defeat to Blackpool but put the disappointment of that loss behind them as they dominated Everton and were rewarded when their French recruit crashed a vicious left-foot shot past Tim Howard. Everton could have snatched a point at the death, but Marouane Fellaini turned the ball over from close range.

Ashley Young netted his fifth goal in as many games against Bolton, curling home a fine free kick, but Aston Villa had to settle for a 1-1 draw as Kevin Davies showed his predatory instincts to lash home a leveller.

West Brom came from a goal behind to claim a 3-1 win over Birmingham. Blues manager Alex McLeish signed a new deal on Saturday, but his side did not give him the fillip he wanted despite taking the lead through Cameron Jerome.

The Baggies trailed at the break but an own goal from Scott Dann handed them some momentum and Peter Odemwingie seized on an error from Lee Bowyer to fire them in front on the hour. The points were sealed when Jonas Olsson headed home with 17 minutes remaining.

Clint Dempsey netted ten minutes after the break to earn Fulham a 1-1 draw at Blackburn, who led through a controversial Chris Samba goal. Fulham were seething when Samba's goal was allowed to stand despite keeper Mark Schwarzer appearing to be bundled to the floor, but they were able to raise a smile when Dempsey turned in a cross from Carlos Salcido.

In the day's early kick-off, West Ham United secured their first point of the season as they drew 1-1 at Stoke City. Scott Parker had put the visitors ahead in the first half, but Kenwyne Jones scored to rescue a point.
