Ancelotti keeps Chelsea focus despite father's illness

Carlo Ancelotti insists his focus will remain on Chelsea despite his father suffering serious ill health.

Ancelotti has been forced to travel back to Italy on a regular basis as his 87-year-old father, who is diabetic, is unwell and needs assistance from his family.

"My father is not well," he said. "He's an old man. Whenever possible, I fly back to Italy to see him. He has good support from my sister, so we don't have a problem for this reason.

"It's not difficult to keep my focus. I've spent a lot of time here and, when I'm not here, I have good support from my assistant.

"Everyone knows my situation. I don't have a problem managing the team for this reason. It's difficult, emotionally, when it's your father... but this is life. I have to do my best to stay close to him, but this is the life.

"If it's possible I will go back on Monday, but I will not miss the Carling Cup game against Newcastle next week. The flights are very regular from Gatwick to Bologna."

Stoke boss Tony Pulis missed the first half of Stoke's victory over Aston Villa following the death of his mother, and Ancelotti said: "It's a personal choice. When it comes to your mother or father, everyone can decide what's best for them and how they should react."

Chelsea take on Blackpool on Sunday in the Premier League.
