Schurrle heading for Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen have won the race to sign Mainz's coveted forward Andre Schurrle, signing him on a five-year contract from next summer.

Schurrle, 19, has caught the eye playing for Mainz in the early stages of the season and clubs from throughout Europe sent scouts to see him in action in their 2-1 win over Kaiserslautern last weekend.

However, Leverkusen have beaten off the competition by signing the player for an undisclosed fee.

"We are delighted to have been able to sign Andre Schurrle, one of the biggest talents in German football, on a long-term contract,'' Bayer general manager Wolfgang Holzhauser said on his club's official website.

Coach Jupp Heynckes is looking forward to working with Schurrle next season.

"He is an outstanding talent in the Bundesliga and we are glad that he has chosen Bayer Leverkusen," he said. "We think he can take a greater step in his career with us on an even higher level."

Schurrle, who has scored two goals in the first three games of the season, sidestepped questions regarding his future at the weekend having vowed to see out the season with Mainz.

And he thanked his current club for not standing in his way.

"I am very grateful to Mainz with the way (general manager) Christian Heidel and coach Thomas Tuchel accommodated my wishes and allowed me to take this next step in my career," he said.
