Reina tries to keep expectations in check

Pepe Reina insists Liverpool have to forget about challenging for the title until money is made available for transfers.

Despite finishing seventh under Rafael Benitez last season, Roy Hodgson was handed limited transfers funds to rebuild the squad and has raised cash through sales, with the likes of Javier Mascherano and Yossi Benayoun moving on.

Liverpool have been able to bring in replacements such as Joe Cole, Raul Meireles and Christian Poulsen but, with funds to improve the squad likely to remain heavily restricted until a club takeover takes place, Reina has warned that there is little prospect of a title challenge.

"We have to make sure that nobody is thinking of winning the league or anything like that at this moment," he said. "It is going to take a while. We have got to get used to the new players and then the system.

"Of course our target is to be up there, but we have to be realistic. We will find out at the end of the season what we can achieve. Maybe it will take a while, and we all have to be patient. April and May is the time to talk about targets.

"We did not spend much money and sometimes in football it is important to do it. Unfortunately, it's going to be like this for a little while until we sort out the other situation."

Hodgson, though, has denied claiming Liverpool cannot win the title.

"I didn't say that because I don't set targets," Hodgson said. "My target is to prepare the team to do well in each game we play and then we'll see where that takes us. I don't set targets and I don't know where those quotes came from."

Asked if the team could win the league, he said: "I don't know. We'll take every game as it comes, work hard in every one and then we'll see where we are in May."
