Struggling Lyon held by Valenciennes

Lyon's indifferent start to the Ligue 1 season continued as they were held to disappointing home draw by Valenciennes.

When Jeremy Pied headed Claude Puel's side in front midway through the first half, they would have been fancied to go on and put the game to bed. They were unable to take advantage of their second-half chances, though, and defender Gaetan Bong headed a second-half equaliser. Lyon are languishing in 12th place in the table, with just one win to their name all season.

Toulouse lost their 100% record as St Etienne recorded a surprise 1-0 win at the Stade Municipal.

The home side had established a four-point lead at the top after winning each of their opening four matches but former Toulouse midfielder Laurent Batlles struck the only goal to move Les Verts up to second, two points adrift of their opponents.

Kader Mangane scored an injury-time winner to ensure Rennes came out on top against Sochaux in a battle between two of Ligue 1's unlikely pacesetters.

Sochaux, who began the day in fourth, found themselves behind in the fourth minute through Kevin Theophile-Catherine's header, but levelled when Damien Perquis netted nine minutes before the break. That looked to be how it would stay until Mangane tapped home from close range to keep his side in second, a point behind pacesetters Toulouse.

Montpellier suffered their first defeat of the season as 10-man Nancy out-fought them and out-thought them to record a 2-1 victory.

After four matches Rene Girard's side had been third in Ligue 1 while Nancy were 18th with four points. The form book went out the window, however, as Djamel Bakar and Bakaye Traore put them 2-0 ahead. Joel Sami was sent-off for a professional foul and while Marco Estrada pulled a goal back, the equaliser never came.

Paris St Germain playmaker Nene proved too hot for Ligue 1 new boys Arles as they were thumped 4-0 at Parc des Princes.

Nene played a role in first-half strikes by Guillaume Hoarau and Mamadou Sakho before the Brazilian bagged two goals after the break to ensure an emphatic win for Antoine Kombouare's men.

PSG's second win of the season leaves the capital club safely inside the top 10 after five games, while top-flight life is not getting any easier for Arles and they remain winless - and pointless - at the bottom of the pile.

Auxerre's poor start to the season continued as they conceded an injury-time equaliser at home to Caen.

The home side had been leading for most of the match at the Stade Abbe-Deschamps but a lapse in concentration cost them as Youssef El Arabi struck two minutes into added time to cancel out Benoit Pedretti's opener.

Lille were made to battle for their first win of the Ligue 1 season against nine-man derby rivals Lens.

The visitors made heavy work of claiming their success in an ill-tempered contest that had looked safely in their control after Lens had Sebastien Roudet and Issam Jemaa sent off following Gervinho's 22nd-minute opener.

Despite their two-man disadvantage Lens levelled through Abdoulrazak Boukari after 60 minutes and their stubborn resolve looked set to earn them a point as the match entered its final 15 minutes. But Pierre-Alain Frau's quick double after 78 and 80 minutes ended Lens' resolve, before the scoreline became even more lop-sided with Gervinho's second late on.
