Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell has been ruled out until December after suffering ankle ligament damage.
Rodwell was taken off after 20 minutes of Everton's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on August 29 and subsequently had to withdraw from the England Under-21 squad.
Medical staff at the club had to wait for the swelling to go down but, having now carried out full tests, it has emerged that Rodwell will be out for three months with the problem.
Rodwell, 19, signed a new five-year contract at Everton in the summer and forced his way into the starting line-up against Villa after an impressive showing in the 5-1 Carling Cup win over League One side Huddersfield.
"I thought when he went over it was a twisted ankle and he'd maybe be out for a week, if at all, but he got scanned and we knew there was a problem," David Moyes said.
"They think it doesn't need surgery but unfortunately he is going to be out for two to three months. We were worried it was going to be a similar injury to Marouane Fellaini's but, thank goodness, it wasn't that bad."
