Aston Villa director asks fans to get behind Houllier

Aston Villa director General Charles C. Krulak has urged Aston Villa fans to give incoming manager Gerard Houllier the respect he "deserves."

Houllier set to join Villa on a two year deal

• Forum: How do you rate Houllier?
• Houllier agrees Villa deal
• Carra: Houllier my role model

It is believed that Houllier has agreed a two-year deal with Villa and his appointment as Martin O'Neill's successor is expected to be confirmed by the club once Houllier has handed in his resignation to the French Football Federation, where he is currently technical director.

The arrival of the man who led Liverpool to a cup treble in 2001 and secured back-to-back titles with Lyon has been met with scepticism by some elements of the Villa support, but Krulak says the club's fans should retain an open mind about the appointment.

"Whatever anyone thinks of him, he deserves respect from the fans of this club," The Times quotes Krulak as writing on a fans' message board. "He has a fine record with multiple clubs and deserves better for the amount of effort he has put into his chosen career than to be ridiculed by AVFC.

"And that is just one person, who has been taken apart on the three sites I post on. We are bigger than that. As I have said many times, we can disagree all we want, but we should do it respectfully.

"It makes little sense to me to pick out one or two candidates and run threads on how much we don't want them or how bad they would be for the club. Any manager worth his salt is going to do some due diligence on the club and that would probably include reading up on the fans and the type of support they might receive."

It is reported on Wednesday morning that Phil Thompson, who worked under Houllier at Anfield, has turned down the chance to join his management staff at Villa Park.
