US defender DeMerit close to Wolfsburg move?

Former Watford captain Jay DeMerit could be set for a shock move to join Steve McClaren at German side Wolfsburg as he is currently without a club.

DeMerit was released by Watford at the end of last season, but played in all of USA's games at the World Cup and the defender is believed to be keen on a move to the Bundesliga where he would join new signings Simon Kjaer and Arne Friedrich in the backline.

The 30-year-old has been searching for a new club since returning from South Africa and said a few weeks ago that he would not be rushing any decision.

"I'm being patient at the moment, that's the only thing I can do," DeMerit told the Football League Podcast. "It was nice to have a break but now it's getting to the point where I want to try and get something sorted out. But like everyone knows, movement isn't something that is happening a lot around the football world at the moment so I'm being patient and not chasing something that I don't necessarily want to do.

"Playing in the World Cup this summer was more or less the ultimate challenge and on a personal level I want to find something that will continue to challenge me. I'm open to most of Europe and to be honest I'm open to going back to the States.''
