Capello with tough choices to make

Manchester City winger Adam Johnson isn't guaranteed a starting role for England against Switzerland despite coming off the bench to score a wonderful goal against Bulgaria.

• Capello backs Hart to be the best
• Milner: England will emerge stronger
• Forum: What now for Rooney?

Johnson hopes his "massive moment" will catapult him into the team from the start on Tuesday night, but coach Fabio Capello is more concerned about the makeup of his central defensive pairing.

A close aide of Capello's told ESPNsoccernet: "It might appear the decision is between [Theo] Walcott and Johnson, but not necessarily. It's all about tactics and who is best to come on, and who is best to start.

"The fact that it worked against Bulgaria that way would lead you to suspect that the manager will keep it the same.''

While there is competition for places on the wings, one position does concern Capello, and that is the lack of experience in the heart of the defence where Gary Cahill came on for the injured Michael Dawson.

Capello is deciding who best to partner Phil Jagielka with John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Ledley King out injured and will need at least one experienced centre back against the Swiss with Matthew Upson dropped to the bench for the Bulgaria game. Fit-again Joleon Lescott is the other option available.

''Cahill did very well when he came on, but a lot depends on the way the opposition play, and who would be best to counter it,'' the source added.

Meanwhile, Neil Warnock who managed Jagielka at Sheffield United has tipped his former charge to make an impact on the side for years to come.

"I think it will be who plays with Jagielka in the years to come. I thought he should have gone to the World Cup. I still don't understand why he didn't go. He'll only get better he'll be a regular,'' he told talkSPORT. ''He should have gone to the World Cup.

''He was one of those kids you could play anywhere; he'd play right back for me, centre midfield, centre-half. His best game probably was when he went in goal against Arsenal.

"Sometimes he gets a little bit casual and that's why playing at the higher standard will eliminate those little moments where he sometimes takes a chance. I think he needs games now and as with Hart this is the time to play them.

On Jagielka's speed Warnock added: "He's worked on that. We worked on his strength in that department. His recovery is his best part. If you watch his timing he anticipates it. He very rarely gets done for pace because of his anticipation.

"I never used to think Bobby Moore was quick but he never got himself in a situation where he got exposed."
