Capello determined to defy critics

Fabio Capello has vowed to battle back from the media criticism and prove himself a success with England.

Capello received heavy criticism in the wake of England's poor showing at the World Cup, but he has begun to receive more positive press following the 4-0 win over Bulgaria.

However, he remains unhappy with the coverage he has received and is determined to prove the critics wrong.

"When you shave in the morning, you have to look in the mirror and ask is what you wrote about this man correct or not," he said. "I can't change what people write. I understand it has to be done.

"I look at myself and I am sure what I brought was good. I try to do my job really well but sometimes I make mistakes. When I started my career as a player I had a lot of big injuries. When I was 20 the newspapers said I was finished. I worked really hard and stayed strong. This time it is the same."

He added: "It is still the dream job. I have a lot of passion and I am a fighter. I always need to fight. That is my mentality. It is my life."

Capello has been pleased with the post-World Cup victories over Hungary and Bulgaria, but he is struggling to show it as a result of the negative press.

A close aide of Capello told ESPNsoccernet: "Fabio is used to criticism from the Italian media and that can be harsh, but it is about technical issues, team selection, tactics, and Fabio is ready to accept such criticism."

Asked whether Capello should smile if England score in Switzerland, he said: "Fabio is concentrated on the team, and although he was pleased with the Bulgaria game, it is a step-by-step process to rebuilding the confidence and team spirit, and he will do this and put all the rubbish that has been said about him behind him."

"Why isn't Fabio smiling or celebrating? Well, he is quite happy at the moment but it is hard for him to show it because he has had a bad couple of weeks, that is one of the reasons."

The aide told ESPNsoccernet that Capello is livid with the way the media have made personal attacks. Capello is said to have been shocked when he was depicted as a Jackass with donkey ears on the back page of one tabloid.

Capello remains focused on making his England team successful, despite still feeling hurt by his and the team's failure in the World Cup finals in South Africa.

When asked whether Capello would smile if England score in Switzerland, he said: "Fabio is concentrated on the team, and although he was pleased with the Bulgaria game, it is a step-by-step process to rebuilding the confidence and team spirit, and he will do this and put all the rubbish that has been said about him behind him."
