Dawson set to miss six weeks

ESPNsoccernet understands England defender Michael Dawson will be out for around six weeks with ligament and cartilage damage after he was stretchered off in the 4-0 win over Bulgaria at Wembley.

It had been believed Dawson may have broken his leg after he left the pitch in agony early in the second half but, following a scan on Saturday morning, it appears the injury is not as bad as first feared.

An FA insider said: "Last night, we really thought Michael Dawson had broken his leg, but the scan has shown no fracture and no snapped ligament. The damage will keep him out for around five to six weeks. It is apparently not so bad as we first feared, and that is at least some good news for him."

The FA has now confirmed it has released Dawson back to Tottenham, with Fabio Capello deciding not to call up a replacement for Tuesday's game in Switzerland.

In a statement, the FA said: "Following a scan on his knee this morning, Michael Dawson will miss England's Euro 2012 qualifier with Switzerland on Tuesday.

"England and Tottenham Hotspur medical staff were in contact this morning and Dawson has now returned to his club for further treatment. There will be no further call-ups."
