Keane never worried by speculation

Robbie Keane insists he had no problem with the constant speculation about his future prior to the close of the transfer window on Tuesday.

Keane has found himself down the pecking order at Tottenham after returning from Liverpool, and there have been reports of interest from clubs including Celtic and Aston Villa, but the 30-year-old insists he remains fully focused on delivering on the pitch.

"It doesn't really affect me," he said. "For a long time now, since I started off, there's always speculation but, unfortunately, I can't help speculation. I can just concentrate on what I am doing. I was quite relaxed about the transfer window. I wasn't really too bothered.

"All the clubs are probably glad now that it is closed and everyone can concentrate on playing football. There won't be a lot of speculation now for at least a couple of months."

Keane has made just two appearances - both as a substitute - for Spurs so far this season, but he is not getting worried about playing time at this stage, particularly as he has been recovering from a knee problem.

"It's only really been two weeks," he said. "The season has only just started. I missed the Stoke game through the injury, but I had a good pre-season.

"I felt good, I felt sharp, and that was only really a few weeks ago, but, of course, every player wants to play in every game they can, and I will certainly look forward to these two games [for Republic of Ireland] coming up."

Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni added: "I am selfish and, at the moment, for the Ireland team, it is better he has played a few games. He is proud and I'm sure he can play like the Robbie Keane we know.

"Robbie is mature. I have spoken to him about whether he should stay with his club, and I said to him, 'Sure, your club needs you'. He is balanced in his mind about football because he knows from many years in England, he knows the situation."

Ireland play Armenia away on Friday before taking on Andorra at home on Tuesday.
