Godin: Time will tell whether Atletico can challenge

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin has refused to get carried away by his new club's impressive start to the season and believes that it will take until December to ascertain whether the Rojiblancos can mount a genuine La Liga title challenge.

Godin has enjoyed a successful introduction to life at the Vicente Calderon, with Atlletico beating European champions Inter Milan to lift the Super Cup in his first competitive game, before thrashing Sporting Gijon 4-0 in their Primera Division opener.

But the Uruguay defender, who played alongside club team-mate Diego Forlan in his country's surprise run to the World Cup semi-finals in South Africa, believes that Atletico still have some way to go before they can challenge Real Madrid and Barcelona at the top of La Liga.

"Clearly, we have started the season well, after winning the Super Cup," Godin said. "I am excited because I won a title in my first official game with Atletico.

"The season will be a long road and we must be consistent. Real Madrid and Barcelona are in front, but it is clear that the target is to be a step above last year.

"Everyone talks about the league but the year is too long. We can tell where we are in December. I have come here to win and the squad have made things easier. In addition, the presence of [Diego] Forlan has helped me."
