West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Scott Carson has been forced to withdraw from the England squad due to a family bereavement.
Carson had been named in the England squad for the first time since he faced Germany in Berlin in November 2008.
It means a second call-up this season for Scott Loach, the highly-rated Watford goalkeeper who is the current first choice for Stuart Pearce's Under-21 side and has long been touted for a Premier League move. He joins Ben Foster and Joe Hart in the squad.
It means there is still no recall for Robert Green, who famously blundered to handle United States a 1-1 draw in the opening group game of the World Cup finals.
Carson could return to the fold ahead of next week's trip to Basle to face Switzerland in another European Championship qualifier.
Phil Jagielka returned to training on Thursday after having to sit out the previous session with an ankle injury. As it seems Matthew Upson is likely to take one central defensive slot, Joleon Lescott, the uncapped Gary Cahill and, most likely, Tottenham's Michael Dawson are the alternatives.
