Gordon Taylor: Squad rules need to be tightened

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor has claimed that new Premier League rules instructing clubs to name a 25-man squad do "not go far enough".

All 20 top-flight clubs submitted their squad lists to the Premier League prior to Wednesday's 1700 BST deadline and despite suggestions that a number of high-profile players would be left on the sidelines until January, in fact very little drama materialised.

Jonathan Woodgate, sidelined by long-term injury, was not included in Tottenham's squad but Manchester United did find room for midfielder Owen Hargreaves, who has similarly seen his career put on hold by fitness problems.

In fact, many clubs did not even submit as many as 25 names in their squad with Arsenal naming 20 senior players and supplementing their list with the names of 56 Under-21 players - including Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs.

The rule was designed to help foster domestic talent and although the imperative is on clubs to ensure they have a ready selection of young players, Taylor believes the existing rules need to be tightened.

"The new 25-man rule is a step in the right direction but it clearly does not go far enough," Taylor told The Sun.

"People talk about getting more home-grown players in squads. But I won't be happy until we have a rule saying that we must have two or three on the field of play."
