Van Marwijk makes Van Bommel new captain
Bert van Marwijk has named his son-in-law Mark van Bommel as the new Netherlands captain.
Van Bommel, 33, succeeds Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who retired after the World Cup final defeat to Spain in South Africa this summer.
"We discussed it with the technical staff for a while before making our decision," Van Marwijk said. "Mark is the correct age and the right position for that. He has done the job in the past for PSV Eindhoven and now for Bayern Munich."
The Oranje face San Marino on Friday in their opening Euro 2012 qualifier, with in-form Hamburg striker Ruud van Nistelrooy hoping to be involved after being drafted in by Van Marwijk to replace the injured Robin van Persie.
Van Nistelrooy retired after Euro 2008 but reversed that decision last season, only to be overlooked for the World Cup squad.
"I still think I could have been useful during the World Cup but now I'm more sharp than in May, so I fully understood the decision of Van Marwijk," he said.
