Stoke make Gudjohnsen enquiry

Stoke chairman Peter Coates has admitted he is attempting to bring veteran forward Eidur Gudjohnsen to the Britannia Stadium before the transfer window closes.

Premier League trading ends at the close of play on Tuesday, and Stoke have already confessed they anticipate a busy 24 hours ahead.

Gudjohnsen is currently at Monaco, but he is keen to return to England after a successful spell with Tottenham last season. Stoke want to bolster their squad following injuries to Kenwyne Jones and Mamady Sidibe, and Coates revealed the Iceland international is their primary target.

"We have enquired about him," Coates told The Sentinel. "We have talked about getting him on a 12-month loan because we think he could be a good player for 12 months, and maybe after that, but whether it happens or not, or how far we will get, we just don't know yet."

Stoke have made a poor start to the Premier League campaign, losing all three games to date.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has denied going on strike in a bid to secure a move to Chelsea.

"I never refused to play. I'd never do such a thing to turn down a chance to play a first-team game," Begovic told BBC Radio 5 Live. "I was aware that there was a bid made and he (Pulis) said it was being considered.

"We spoke about it, it was a private conversation and for it to get out publicly was a little bit disappointing. I tried to see him before the team meeting but he refused to see me and then he named the team.

"We spoke about the situation and as far as he was concerned he understood the position I was in and he didn't have any problems with me not playing at the time and I thought that was the end of the story but I would never go on strike. That's an absolutely disgraceful accusation for people to make."
