Hammers fail in Trezeguet bid

West Ham look to have failed with a bid to sign former France international David Trezeguet from Juventus.

Manchester United-West Ham preview

Trezeguet, 32, looks set to leave Juve and has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs including Birmingham and Liverpool, but he now looks set to join Spanish side Hercules.

A Hammers insider told Soccernet: "West Ham tried, but they were told he's going to Spain."

Asked about the situation on Friday, boss Avram Grant said: "I cannot answer about Trezeguet or others. There are a few areas that we don't have players at all so this is our first priority but, in any position, if there are players, that can be good for us because we have a long season."

West Ham are still looking to add another striker to the side despite the arrival of Victor Obinna on loan from Inter, and they would also like to strengthen at right back. Hamburg's Ivory Coast international Guy Demel is under consideration.

They are also confident Scott Parker, a target for Spurs, will commit to a new four-year deal with an option for a further year. Spurs are keen on the midfielder and there has been speculation that he has been delaying a decision on his future as he would be eager to play in the Champions League.

However, West Ham believe the issue is no more than a formality, with the delay in the deal caused simply as lawyers have been putting in place the finer details.

Meanwhile, co-owner David Sullivan is hoping to finally spring an upset when West Ham visit Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Hammers have yet to earn a point after their first two games and could find themselves bottom if they fail to take anything from Manchester United, and Sullivan feels history is against him.

He told Soccernet: "In all my visits to Old Trafford with Birmingham, and West Ham United last season, the team I owned have never scored a goal! I think I went six times with Birmingham and one as West Ham United."
