Obinna agrees Hammers switch

Soccernet can confirm that West Ham have clinched a deal to sign Inter striker Victor Obinna on loan with a view to a permanent move.

Obinna, 23, was undergoing a medical on Thursday and is then due to sign for the club. He will not be eligible to face Manchester United on Saturday, however, due to international clearance.

West Ham have been desperate to bolster their strike-force, with Carlton Cole, Benedict McCarthy and Frederic Piquionne all struggling to impress and Alessandro Diamanti returning to Italy with Brescia. He has played 34 games for Nigeria and scored 11 goals.

They will now turn their focus to defence. Soccernet has learned that they have made a bid for Hamburg right-back Guy Demel, who has been told he is surplus to requirements at the Imtech Arena.

"Of course it surprised and annoyed me when I was told from above that I could go," the Ivory Coast international told Kicker earlier this month. "I too am very unhappy with my last season, but there are reasons for this.

"I feel fresh in my mind, and I am physically well. I'm really hungry. I am now 29, have experience and finally the necessary fitness. I think this is now the best Demel of all time."

West Ham also hope to finally tie up Scott Parker's new four-year contract on Thursday.
