Redknapp in dreamland after Spurs qualification

Harry Redknapp said Tottenham's success in qualifying for the Champions League was a "dream" following a 4-0 win over Young Boys, but he will not be looking to strengthen his squad after reaching the lucrative group stages.

Redknapp on Inter draw

Tottenham last competed in the premier European trophy when taking part in the European Cup in the 1961-62 season. On that occasion they reached the semi-finals before succumbing to Portuguese side Benfica.

Tottenham will discover their opposition when the draw for the group stage is made on Thursday evening, and Redknapp admitted that negotiating the qualifying rounds fulfilled one of his major ambitions at White Hart Lane.

"It's fantastic, it's a long time since Tottenham played in the top European competition," Redknapp said. "To get in the main competition and the group stages...when I came here that was the dream for me.

"It is a good night for Tottenham - as a kid I used to come training here and watched the games with Benfica in those great days, and at that time it was amazing to see European football and the way this place was jumping.

"To bring it back tonight was great for the fans - and that is what it is all about really, the supporters, we have given them something to look forwards to in the Champions League. Now I will probably just go home, have a bacon sandwich and a cup of tea, that is all I want.

"This is a club with European tradition, under the great Bill Nicholson, I would not be in the same class as him, and never will be, but it is great for the club to be in this position now.''

When asked if this meant Spurs would be investing some of their prize money on new players: "I don't think so, people think I like to keep signing players, that's not true at all. I always wanted a squad where I don't need to sign players.

"I won't be pushing the chairman to buy players, not at all. Unless we can really improve the squad we'll sit tight."

Peter Crouch scored a hat-trick at White Hart Lane while Jermain Defoe was also on the scoresheet despite the club confirming on Tuesday that the striker will undergo surgery on his groin and miss England's upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

"Yesterday [Tuesday] they said he'd have to have the operation," Redknapp said. "He's booked in as far as I know so unless there's a change of plan I don't know, I'm not a medical man."

Young Boys coach Vladimir Petkovic admitted his side were outmuscled by the Premier League side at White Hart Lane.

"First I must congratulate Tottenham for their clear victory,'' he said. "We paid for the fact that Spurs had a physical advantage over us, won every header, and their second goal just broke us. After that, Spurs played (with) more fluency, confidence and created chances.''
