Carling Cup: Toon, Toffees, Fulham cruise

Newcastle United's young guns showed their class to see off a spirited Accrington Stanley 3-2 and book a place in the Third Round of the Carling Cup. The Magpies, fresh from a 6-0 trouncing of Aston Villa, named a new-look line-up with the likes of James Tavernier, Tamas Kadar and Shane Ferguson getting the chance to show their potential.

And Ryan Taylor played his part in repaying the faith shown by manager Chris Hughton, collecting the ball inside the Accrington half before unleashing an unstoppable 30-yard screamer into the top corner.

The goal could have knocked the stuffing out of the League Two outfit but their persistence paid off when Ray Putterill levelled matters with an equally magnificent strike.

Shola Ameobi fired home from eight yards to put the visitors back in front, before Peter Lovenkrands made sure of the win. Sean Hessey set up a frantic finale with a goal in injury time, but it was too little too late.

Everton earned a morale-boosting victory with a 5-1 mauling of Huddersfield Town at Goodison Park.

The Toffees have not started well in the Premier League, picking up one point from their opening two matches, and in a clear bid to establish some much-needed confidence, David Moyes fielded a strong side.

Marouane Fellaini was given a starting role, and his impact was immediate as he got on the end of debutant Magaye Gueye's cross to head the home side in front. England youngster Jack Rodwell lashed in a second to seemingly put the tie to bed, only for Johnny Heitinga to turn into his own net before half-time.

Jermaine Beckford added a third from the penalty spot for his first goal for the club and it could have been two from 12 yards but Heitinga missed his penalty. However, Louis Saha netted to give the home side a three-goal cushion and there was no way back for Huddersfield.

Leon Osman got in on the act before the final whistle sounded and Moyes will be hoping his side can transfer their good fortunes into their next Premier League match with Aston Villa.

Zoltan Gera and Bobby Zamora both grabbed a brace as Fulham thrashed Port Vale 6-0 at Craven Cottage.

Mark Hughes signalled his intentions for the competition by making only three changes to the side that started in the 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

Gera got the ball rolling in the 10th minute, heading in Matthew Briggs's cross at the far post. New £5 million signing Moussa Dembele then made a name for himself by rifling in a strike on his debut to put the home side well in command.

Not to be outdone, Zamora blasted his first from a tight angle as the floodgates well and truly opened. Gera and Zamora struck again after the break and Clint Dempsey marked his return to action with a stunning finish to leave the Fulham faithful in dreamland.
