Everton expect Pienaar to stay

Everton assistant manager Steve Round has dismissed speculation Steven Pienaar could leave the club this summer amid reported interest from Tottenham.

Pienaar, 28, has just one year remaining on his contract and there has been talk of a swap deal with Spurs for Peter Crouch as Everton look to ensure they do not lose the player on a free at the end of the season.

However, Round has denied holding talks with Spurs and said he fully expects Pienaar to remain at Goodison Park.

"There has been no contact," he said. "Steven Pienaar is a very, very important player for us. We value him very highly. He was our player of the year last year and he was terrific.

"The manager has said all along that we want him to stay. He has signed with us, he is under contract and as far as we are concerned he will be an Everton player this season.

"There is no truth in the speculation. Steven has been a terrific player for us and is a terrific asset."

Round also said Everton will continue to assess transfer targets.

"Recruitment is an ongoing process always, so the window shuts but we will be at the international games to see who we could possibly sign in January, the following year, and you are forever looking," he said.

"Something might break this week but I think the manager is pleased with his squad. I think he is pleased with where he is at. That's not to say nothing will happen - you never know. Watch the countdown."
