Pompey reject West Brom offer for captain Wilson

Portsmouth have rejected an improved offer for captain Marc Wilson from West Brom.

Wilson, 23, remains a key player in boss Steve Cotterill's plans and, while Pompey have been keen to raise money through player sales this summer, administrator Andrew Andronikou says they have no plans to part with the defender.

"West Brom offered us £3 million plus add-ons but that has been turned down," he told The News. "Steve Cotterill does not want to sell such an important player.

"At the moment, as a club he is not a player we have identified to sell. We will have to wait and see what happens."

Pompey are still short of numbers in the squad and the appearance of Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan among the club's fans for Saturday's game against Preston sparked rumours of a loan switch.

However, Cotterill said: "I don't know what Obertan was doing there. At the end of the day, why would he sit in with the Pompey crowd if we were signing him?"

Cotterill said that Nwankwo Kanu, though, could return to the club in the near future.

"Maybe something could happen with King (Kanu) in the week," he said. "If his contract gets sorted out, that would give us another body. We need that sort of clever player.

"I can't make any other great strides until we can get ourselves a squad together that can be competitive. I don't want to worry about an injury and I want to get in one of the formations we want to use."
