Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier has accused Newcastle of arrogance in their pursuit of midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa.
The France international had been in talks with the Magpies over a loan move to St James' Park, but Marseille insist the midfielder will stay at the club this season.
Ben Arfa had also been linked with a move to Werder Bremen as a replacement for playmaker Mesut Ozil following his transfer to Real Madrid, but the German club have denied their interest in the player.
"I asked Newcastle to add an automatic buyout clause if they stay in the Premier League. They refused," Dassier said in the Mirror.
"The English should not take us for idiots. They have seen what has happened with Hatem and are trying to take advantage. It would be better for him to go to Bremen. They are more serious."
