Portugal ban coach Queiroz for anti-doping insults

The Portuguese football association (FPF) has suspended coach Carlos Queiroz for 30 days for insulting anti-doping officials ahead of this summer's World Cup.

Queiroz, 57, will miss Portugal's fist two Euro 2012 qualifiers, against Cyprus on September 3 and Norway on September 7, and must also pay a €1000 fine for the incident at a pre-tournament training camp in Covilha.

The former Real Madrid boss was accused of directing obscene words to controllers, including Luis Horta - the the head of the Portuguese anti-doping agency.

The FPF's disciplinary committee were satisfied that the accusations of abuse were true, though they did admit that there was no evidence to suggest that Queiroz hindered the officials' work in any way.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Luis Figo spoke as a character witnesses at the hearing in Lisbon, but despite Queiroz telling the committee that he was merely trying to protect the privacy of his players, he could not convince them of his innocence.
