Arsenal fail in second bid for Mark Schwarzer

Fulham have rejected a second bid from Arsenal for their Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, according to reports.

• Arsenal move for Squillaci

Arsenal have publicly expressed an interest in signing Schwarzer this summer and the goalkeeper has gone as far as submitting a transfer request at Craven Cottage.

However, Mark Hughes is reluctant to sell Schwarzer, 37, and it has emerged that Arsenal have seen a second offer of £2 million for the goalkeeper turned down by their London counterparts.

Manuel Almunia captained Arsenal in their opening game of the season against Liverpool but he attracted criticism for failing to prevent a shot from David Ngog beating him at his near post.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have confirmed that young midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong has been ruled out for up to nine months due to a cruciate ligament injury.

Frimpong, 18, impressed in pre-season and particularly against AC Milan in the Emirates Cup, but will miss the majority of the season after suffering the blow when training with the club's reserves in Dublin.

"We have had another blow with Emmanuel Frimpong," Wenger told the club's official website. "He has done his cruciate in training. That is a massive blow.

"A cartilage is three to four weeks, but a cruciate like that one Frimpong did yesterday [Friday] is six to nine months. I rate him highly and I still have a lot of faith in him, but we will miss him for six to nine months."
