Mancini hits back at Ferguson's "kamikaze" claims

Roberto Mancini has hit back at Sir Alex Ferguson's criticisms of Manchester City's "kamikaze" spending by insisting that Manchester United have employed the same transfer strategy in the past.

• City's turnover of players continues

Mancini used the unveiling of £24 million James Milner - a protracted signing that took City's summer spending to well in excess of £100 million - to dismiss Ferguson's thinly-veiled barb.

"I think all the other teams have spent a lot of money in the past," Mancini said. "I don't mean 15 years ago but in the last one, two three years. It is not important for me [what Ferguson says]. But I repeat that Manchester United, like Manchester City, have spent a lot of money in the past."

England international Milner did nothing to ease the pressure on Mancini by declaring that he has joined his new club from Aston Villa in order to win the Premier League title. The winger, whose player-plus-cash transfer saw Stephen Ireland move in the opposite direction, revealed that the decision to make the switch to City was a straightforward one.

"It didn't take too much selling by the boss when you see the players who are already here," Milner said. "The last thing he said to me was 'be ready to win the Premier League'. That's my ultimate aim - that's why I'm here."
