Lawwell: Celtic agreed Bellamy deal with Man City

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has revealed the club agreed a deal to sign Craig Bellamy on loan, only to be rejected by the player as he chose to join Cardiff City.

• Bellamy denies City beef
• Well threaten winding-up order
• Forum: Are City a complete mess?

Celtic were hoping to secure Bellamy on loan once again, having seen the Welshman score seven goals in 13 league games during a previous spell in Glasgow in 2005.

And while they did strike a deal with City, Lawwell says they were unable to convince Bellamy that he would be best served by returning to the SPL, with the player instead choosing the Championship and a move closer to his family.

"We couldn't have done any more," Lawwell told the Glasgow Evening Times. "We agreed a deal with Manchester City and we had been talking to Craig for over a week.

"But at the end of the day, if you lose out to someone who wants to go home there's nothing you can do about it."

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis says he also asked after Bellamy, only to discover the striker had his heart set on a move to Wales.

"We inquired about Craig," Pulis told The Sentinel. "But unfortunately for us his main concern was getting back to Wales to be close to his young family.

"Cardiff is also his hometown club, so it all fitted for him to make that move instead of the other offers on the table for him."
