Spurs avoid Young Boys thrashing, Ajax held

Young Boys caused a major shock by beating Tottenham 3-2 in Bern, but away goals from Sebastien Bassong and Roman Pavlyuchenko spared Spurs' blushes.

Harry Redknapp's side will be delighted with a comeback from 3-0 down after a humiliating half-hour at the Stade de Suisse in which their hapless defence was torn to shreds.

A flurry of first-half goals from goals from Senad Lulic, Henri Bienvenu and Xavier Hochstrasser did the damage but Bassong scored just before half-time and Pavlyuchenko struck late on to ensure Spurs will remain favourites ahead of next Wednesday's second leg.

Second-half goals from Momodou Ceesay and Tomas Oravec put Slovakian champions MSK Zilina on the brink of becoming their nation's first ever representatives in the Champions League group stage.

After Slovakia's impressive performance at the World Cup, Zilina continued to fly the flag as they emerged 2-0 victors away at Czech giants Sparta Prague.

Ajax were held 1-1 by Dynamo Kiev in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying play-off in Ukraine.

The four-time European champions took the lead in the 57th minute, a minute after Dynamo were reduced to ten men; Denys Garmash ordered off for a second bookable offence, a foul on Jan Vertonghen.

And Ajax made them pay when Demy de Zeeuw's free-kick picked out Vertonghen who headed home, only to let in an equaliser nine minutes later when Oleh Gusev fired home.

Alexander Kerzhakov's winner put Zenit St Petersburg in the driving seat against Auxerre, but the Russian side were left cursing a host of missed first-half chances.

Kerzhakov opened the scoring in the third minute with a glancing header from six yards out, and it turned out to be the decisive blow in a 1-0 win.

Zenit dominated the first half but were unable to convert on several occasions and Auxerre also demonstrated profligacy - something they can't afford to do in the return leg in France next week.

Auxerre midfielder Dennis Oliech struck the crossbar from the edge of the box just before half-time and in the second period Polish striker Ireneusz Jelen lobbed the ball over the top after latching onto a long pass.

Steffen Iversen and Markus Henriksen scored for Rosenborg as they beat FC Copenhagen 2-1. The Danes pinched a late consolation through Jesper Gronkjaer to give themselves hope ahead of the second leg, when they will have home advantage.
