Kompany: City spending 'good for football'

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany has hit back at criticism of the club's massive spending, insisting that Roberto Mancini's significant summer outlay is good for the game.

Mancini has spent more than £100 million on players in an effort to assemble a squad capable of mounting a genuine title challenge, and James Milner's imminent arrival will push their outgoings even higher.

City have attracted plenty of criticism from their Premier League rivals for their extravagant spending, with Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey and Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner both recently expressing their unhappiness at the club's transfer policy.

But Kompany believes that just as Roman Abramovich's spending helped break the stranglehold of Manchester United and Arsenal on the Premier League title, City's lavish expenditure can make the English top flight the most competitive and exciting in the world.

"It is good for English football what is happening here, no matter what people are saying," Kompany said. "Everybody is enjoying it, even if they are criticising us. If they are saying positive stuff, our fans are enjoying it.

"It's fine, we just need to be able to deal with the pressure and I have no problem with that. It doesn't matter if people want us to fail. We know that nearly 50,000 people at Eastlands want us to do well.

"Nobody was complaining about having a top four. You want to have a competitive league and big spending attracts the top players."

And Kompany said that most criticism is driven by jealousy of City, with fans wishing that an owner of the wealth of Sheikh mansour would inject some money into their clubs.

"Everybody's kind of hoping for a similar situation to happen to their club," Kompany said. "I understand the situation, I have no problem with people giving their opinion and not being happy about it but all we can do is go out and play and we are happy the season has started.

"Nobody is nervous. The season is long and I think everybody will get a chance. We are trying to create team spirit rather than create divisions."
