Marseille sent packing by Valenciennes

Champions Marseille's start to the new Ligue 1 season went from bad to worse as they went down 3-2 at Valenciennes.

A week after losing their opening fixture to top-flight new boys Caen, OM conceded three times in 15 minutes early in the second half to go 3-0 down. Gregory Pujol added a double to Gael Danic's 47th-minute opener and, although the visitors responded with Taye Taiwo's penalty and an Andre Ayew effort late on, it was insufficient.

Striker Mamadou Niang was playing his last game for the club, who confirmed after the match he was joining Turkish giants Fenerbahce. The victory for Valenciennes sent them joint top of the fledgling table on four points with Rennes and Nice.

Rennes tore 10-man Nancy apart with an impressive second-half display to clinch a 3-0 win. The first half finished goalless but Victor Montano, Yacine Brahimi and Yann M'Vila were on target after the interval as Rennes went on the rampage.

Nancy's job was made harder by the fact they had to play all but 13 minutes of the match with 10 men after Alfred N'Diaye was sent off for a professional foul on Montano.

In-demand striker Loic Remy grabbed the second-half winner as Nice secured a 2-1 win at Lorient.

Lorient, who have installed a synthetic pitch this season, went ahead after 10 minutes when a corner reached Yann Jouffre who was positioned 20 yards from goal and struck a low shot into the bottom right corner.

But the lead lasted just a minute, as Ismael Gace headed Anthony Mounier's corner past Lionel Cappone for a swift equaliser and Remy's close-range finish in the 69th minute completed the turnaround.

St Etienne bounced back from an opening-day defeat away to Paris St Germain by beating Sochaux 3-2 at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. The home side made the perfect start as Boubacar Sanogo gave them a seventh-minute lead, and they were 3-0 up by the 64th minute thanks to two goals from Loic Perrin.

Sochaux fought back with quickfire goals from Ryad Boudebouz and Marvin Martin but Les Verts held on to open their Ligue 1 account.

Brest and Auxerre drew 1-1, Nolan Roux opened the scoring for Brest only for Benoit Pedretti to level seven minutes from time.

Substitute David Pollet scored with his first touch as Lens won 1-0 away to Ligue 1 new boys Arles-Avignon, while Monaco's match at home to Montpellier was postponed due to torrential rain.
