Arsenal boss Wenger signs new contract until 2014

On the first day of the new Premier League season, Arsenal have announced that Arsene Wenger has extended his contract at the club until 2014.

• Wenger hits out at new rules

The Frenchman, who has won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups since taking charge of the club in 1996, announced on Friday he was close to reaching an agreement with the Gunners.

And ahead of Arsenal's opening fixture of the new season against Liverpool on Sunday, Arsenal have confirmed that Wenger has formally committed his future to the club once again as he seeks to end a trophy drought that extends back to 2005.

Wenger told the club's official website: "My heart belongs to Arsenal and my desire is to see this team win silverware. My commitment and drive are as strong and fresh as ever. Signing a new deal means that I can see this talented group of players reach their potential. Trust me, they are ready to deliver.

"With my staff and players we are in front of an exciting challenge and we are looking forward to achieving much success."

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood said: "We are thrilled that Arsene has signed an extension to his contract. He has masterfully transformed this football club over the last 14 years and the exciting and compelling football we play under his stewardship is admired the world over.

"Arsene is a very talented man and we believe the young, exciting team he has nurtured over the past five years will reward his and the fans' patience with silverware."

Wenger joined Arsenal from Japanese side Grampus Eight in 1996 when replacing Bruce Rioch, and immediately set about transforming the North London club, and English football.

He won the Double in his first full season in 1997-98 and repeated the feat in 2002. His greatest achievement was the 2003-04 campaign when Arsenal went unbeaten to claim the Premier League crown for a third time.

However, the club have not won a trophy since the FA Cup in 2005, losing in both the Champions League final of 2006 and the League Cup final in 2007.
