Wenger not ruling out fresh bid for Schwarzer

Arsene Wenger has denied he could make an offer for Joe Hart or Shay Given but refused to rule out a further bid for Mark Schwarzer.

Hughes wants to keep Schwarzer
Arsenal facing injury crisis

Arsenal are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper this summer, and reports have suggested he could look to sign Hart or Given from Manchester City as both players have said they will not be happy to sit on the bench this season.

However, when asked if he was considering a move for either of the duo, Wenger replied: "No."

In his press conference on Friday, City boss Roberto Mancini said he wanted to keep Hart and Given at Eastlands this season.

"We have fantastic goalkeepers," he said. "One will play, the other will go on the bench, but I hope they both can remain here because we need two great goalkeepers."

Arsenal, though, have already shown interest in Fulham 'keeper Schwarzer and the 37-year-old has said he wants to move to Emirates Stadium, but a £2 million bid was rejected earlier in the summer and new boss Mark Hughes has outlined his determination to keep him.

Wenger would not be drawn on whether he plans to make an improved offer.

"What is important is for us to focus on players who are in the squad and not give too much room to any speculation," he said. "I believe that we have goalkeepers who have quality and class - they have a good opportunity to show that on Sunday.

"We do not need to buy to play well on Sunday. When everyone is fit and available, we have quite a strong squad. Also, we have this stupid rule in place with the 25 players, so everybody has to look not to have too many players."

Wenger also said that he has been impressed by the attitude shown by captain Cesc Fabregas since he was denied a move to Barcelona.

"Cesc has been very good, despite all of that story. His love for the club was never under threat," he said. "You could understand he was torn between Barcelona and staying here, but he really deeply loves the club. His attitude has been completely spot-on."

Wenger added: "I tried very hard to show him how much I want him to stay and of course you never completely know the outcome, but my resolution and determination was always very strong to keep him - and it was never a question of money."
