Mensah returns to Sunderland

Sunderland have re-signed Lyon defender John Mensah on a season-long loan deal.

• Play Premier League fantasy

Mensah, 27, spent last season at the Stadium of Light and, despite seeing his time at the club hindered by injury problems, Steve Bruce remained keen on the Ghana international and has now sealed a temporary switch.

A statement on Sunderland's official website read: "Defender John Mensah is back with Sunderland after signing a further one-year loan deal."

Mensah made 18 appearances for Sunderland last season and played for Ghana at this summer's World Cup in South Africa.

Bruce is now believed to be trying to tie up loan deals for Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha and Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck.
