Niemeyer joins Hertha on loan from Bremen

Peter Niemeyer has left Werder Bremen to join second division side Hertha Berlin on a one-year loan just hours after extending his contract with the club.

The 26-year-old will bid to gain some regular match practice after failing to hold down a regular berth in the Bremen team and he will be returning to the Bundesliga no matter what happens this season.

Should Berlin be promoted, they have the option to sign him on a permanent deal, but should they fail to return to the top flight, Niemeyer will return to Bremen for the remaining 12 months of his contract.

"In recent years, Peter has always been a player who has fluctuated between the bench and the starting XI and given our large complement of midfielders, it was going to be very difficult for him this season to get the amount of games he would like,'' explained Bremen's director of sport Klaus Allofs.

"I believe this transfer helps everybody. We are also certain that Peter will make the breakthrough in Berlin.''

Niemeyer joined Bremen in 2007 from FC Twente and made a total of 32 appearances for the club.
