Phillips faces 'considerable period' out with injury
Veteran Birmingham striker Kevin Phillips has been ruled out for a "considerable period" after tearing his thigh muscle in a friendly on Saturday.
Blues boss Alex McLeish revealed that tests on Monday showed Phillips ripped his muscle after coming on as a substitute against Real Mallorca.
But while the Birmingham manager asmitted he is expecting a lengthy absence, he remained optimistic about Phillips' chances of recovering.
"Kevin will be out for a while - it will be a considerable period," McLeish said. "But he is a notoriously quick healer so anything will be a bonus."
Phillips scored four goals for Birmingham last season, including a crucial brace in a 2-1 win over Midlands rivals Wolves and an equaliser against Arsenal.
The 37-year-old was rewarded with a one-year contract extension, which he signed in June, ensuring he will stay at St Andrews until the end of the 2010-11 campaign.
