Fulham midfielder Simon Davies ends Wales career

Fulham midfielder Simon Davies has retired from international football with Wales.

The Football Association of Wales announced on Sunday night the 30-year-old had called time on his 58-cap career after withdrawing from this week's friendly against Luxembourg.

The news is a blow for manager John Toshack ahead of the start of Euro 2012 qualifying next month.

Toshack spoke only on Friday of the importance of senior players such as Davies, Craig Bellamy and James Collins to his side's hopes of qualification.

Davies, who scored six goals for his country, last played for Wales in the friendly loss to Sweden in March.

That, however, had been his first appearance in almost a year because of injury and the player now feels he needs to concentrate on affairs at Craven Cottage.

A statement from the FAW read: "During the last 18 months, Davies has been troubled with a foot injury and he has decided that in order to prolong his career, he will end his international commitments.

"The FAW would like to take the opportunity of thanking Simon for his service and wishes him well for the forthcoming season with Fulham.''

Bristol City's on-loan Wolves striker Sam Vokes has also withdrawn from Wednesday's friendly in Llanelli with a hamstring injury.

Sheffield United striker Ched Evans suffered an ankle injury in his side's Championship opener against Cardiff this afternoon and will not train on Monday.

Wales were already without Collins, Lewin Nyatanga, Joe Allen, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Collison due to injury.

The FAW have not yet announced whether Toshack will call up any replacements for the missing players.
