Brown joins Robinson in quitting international football

Fabio Capello's preparations for Wednesday's friendly against Hungary have been thrown into further disarray by the news that Wes Brown has joined Paul Robinson in announcing his retirement from international football.

Capello announces England squad

Both men were named in a new-look England squad on Saturday night but Robinson made the shock announcement on Sunday that he would be withdrawing his services for England.

The Blackburn 'keeper was unwilling to be merely a squad player under Capello and has chosen to focus exclusively on club matters, although England did not call up a replacement player.

Now the Football Association has confirmed that Brown visited England's team hotel in Watford on Sunday to inform Capello he no longer wished to be considered.

"Wes Brown has this evening announced his retirement from international football,'' read a statement from the FA on Sunday night. "He came to the England team hotel this evening to meet with and tell Fabio Capello in person.''

The Manchester United defender won 22 caps for England, the last of which came against Egypt at Wembley in March 2010.

But Brown, 30, was overlooked for the World Cup finals in South Africa and has now indicated he has no desire to continue his international career.

"After a lot of thought and with a very heavy heart, I have decided the time is right for me to retire from international football," Brown said.

"At the age of 30 I feel it is right for me to stand aside and let younger players come through, which allows me to concentrate on my club career.

"I regard it as an honour and a privilege to have represented my country at every level from Under-15s upwards. I have always been very proud to play for England and wish them well in future tournaments.''

Jamie Carragher was England's reserve right back in South Africa, acting as deputy for Liverpool team-mate Glen Johnson, but has also announced his retirement from international football, along with striker Emile Heskey.

The FA has said there will be no replacement called up "at this time", although Everton defender Phil Jagielka can also play as a full back.
