Clough inspired win over Leeds

Derby boss Nigel Clough used a motivational technique reminiscent of his late father as he inspired his team to a 2-1 victory over Leeds.

Clough stopped the Derby bus before it reached Elland Road, allowing his players to walk into the ground, and captain Robbie Savage feels it buoyed the team.

"We were brave, we were honest and we deserved the win," he told the BBC. "The gaffer stopped the coach and we walked to the ground through the Leeds fans and we showed no fear and not one Leeds fan said anything.

"The lads were fantastic and to come here on opening day when we weren't given a chance, we've done all right. If we play our football, we're going to get caught at times, as we did with the goal, but we're going to play and learn from the gaffer. We're the underdogs and we love that."

Brian Clough famously managed Leeds for 44 days in 1974 having already led Derby to the league title. Clough replaced his bitter rival Don Revie, and his apparent dislike for the club was fictionalised in The Damned United.

Nigel Clough was given a frosty welcome by the fans at Elland Road because of his father's relationship with Leeds, but the Rams boss insists he was simply happy to get the victory.

"The result didn't give me any special satisfaction because of my dad's time at Leeds," he said. "I thought it was a very good, solid performance. It was an encouraging performance, but there is still a long way to go."
