Toivonen on target in PSV victory

PSV Eindhoven fired out a statement of intent on the opening weekend of the new Eredivisie season as they ran out comfortable 3-1 winners at Heerenveen.

Ola Toivonen struck twice in the second period to set up the victory while Orlando Engelaar added a third at the death. Milan Kopic pulled Heerenveen level just after the hour mark but PSV's greater class told as the match wore on.

NEC Nijmegen made a winning start to the new Eredivisie season as Ramon Zomer's second-half strike proved sufficient to see off visiting VVV Venlo.

A largely uninspiring season opener was settled five minutes into the second period as Zomer's header secured all three points for Wiljan Vloet's troops.

De Graafschap began life back in the Eredivisie with a bang as they crushed fellow top-flight new boys Excelsior 3-0.

Rydell Poepon opened the scoring in the eighth minute and Muslu Nalbantoglu added a second on the hour mark. Steve De Ridder made it three with six minutes left as last season's Eerste Divisie champions ran out easy winners.

Heracles Almelo made a fine start to their Eredivisie campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win over Willem II, who look set for another season of struggle after surviving a relegation play-off in May.

Marko Vejinovic opened the scoring for Heracles in just the second minute before a second-half double from Glynor Plet made the result safe.
