Marseille start with shock defeat

Marseille opened the defence of their Ligue 1 title with a shock 2-1 home defeat to promoted Caen, while Lyon drew 0-0 with Monaco.

Nicolas Seube gave the unfancied visitors the lead at Stade Velodrome, and while Mamadou Samassa equalised after 77 minutes, Caen secured the win thanks to a late effort from Youssef El Arabi.

Lyon were forced to settle for a point as goalkeepers were on top in their goalless meeting with Monaco at Stade Gerland.

OL, who won seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles before missing out in each of the last two seasons, had chances to win it but equally had France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to thank for keeping Monaco out at the other end.

Paris St Germain got their season off to a positive start with a solid 3-1 victory over St Etienne at the Parc des Princes.

Mevlut Erding set the capital club on their way but Dimitri Payet levelled after 37 minutes. However, spectacular volleys from Stephane Sessegnon and Nene ensured PSG emerged with maximum points.

Auxerre and Lorient emerged with honours even from an entertaining Ligue 1 opener at Stade Abbe-Deschamps.

Visitors Lorient went ahead through Sigamary Diarra early in the contest before Benoit Pedretti levelled before the break. Auxerre got their noses in front when summer signing Anthony Le Tallec smashed home a debut goal but Arnold Mvuemba's strike midway through the second period ensured both sides left with a point apiece.

Moussa Sow pounced in the second half to snatch a share of the spoils for Lille in a 1-1 draw at Rennes. Ismal Bangoura struck a first-half opener for Rennes, but Sow headed in a 62nd-minute equaliser as the honours ended even.

Issam Jemaa missed a last-minute penalty that would have salvaged a late point for Lens in their 2-1 defeat to Nancy. Jemaa stepped up to the spot after Pascal Berenguer had been sent off for a dangerous tackle, but keeper Damien Gregorini dived the right way to foil his effort.

Arles-Avignon were denied victory on their first appearance in the French top flight as Sochaux battled from a goal down to post a solid opening-day 2-1 victory. Franck Djadjede scored Arles-Avignon's first Ligue 1 goal after just nine minutes of the contest but hopes of a dream result were swiftly quashed when Edouard Butin levelled for the hosts seven minutes later. Jacques Faty scored the winner.

A Daniel Braaten effort nine minutes before the break and a Paulo Machado penalty in the 86th minute earned Toulouse a 2-0 win at home to newly-promoted Brest.

Nice had to settle for a point from their opening Ligue 1 game against Valenciennes after failing to capitalise on a succession of chances. David Hellebuyck's volley which came back off the crossbar early in the second half was as close as either side came to breaking the deadlock.
