Australia book October date with Paraguay

Australia have lined up a game against World Cup quarter-finalists Paraguay in Sydney on October 9.

Football Federation Australia chief executive Ben Buckley has presented the match as a 'welcome home' for the players, despite a largely disappointing showing by the team in South Africa. FFA technical director Han Berger is currently acting as caretaker, while the search for departed coach Pim Verbeek's replacement continues.

Berger has selected a youthful squad for a friendly against Slovenia next Wednesday, as the federation comes to terms with the need to blood new talent ahead of the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar.

"It will be the only time the national team will play in Australia for the rest of this year so I urge all Socceroos fans to get in early and get their tickets so they are not disappointed,'' Buckley said. "It should be a fantastic match as Paraguay is a top-quality opponent, as shown by the fact the team reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup before losing to eventual winners Spain.''
