Roberto Baggio confirmed in Italy role

Italy legend Roberto Baggio has returned to football after his appointment as part of the staff of the national set-up was confirmed by the federation.

Baggio, who retired in 2004, was officially confirmed as technical committee president at an Italian Football Federation (FIGC) board meeting. The striker scored 27 goals in 56 appearances for Italy and is the only Azzurri player ever to score in three World Cups.

He led the Azzurri to the World Cup final in 1994, scoring five goals en route, but famously missed the final kick in the penalty shoot-out against Brazil.

The playmaker enjoyed a glittering 22-year career with a number of clubs including both Milan teams, Juventus and Fiorentina.

The FIGC have also turned to two other Italian legends as they shake up the national team following their disappointing World Cup, where they crashed out in the group stage.

Former AC Milan star Gianni Rivera has been appointed president of the youth academy while ex-Azzurri coach Arrigo Sacchi is the new co-ordinator of the junior national teams, including the Under-21s.
