Hodgson left disappointed by Al Fayed criticism

Roy Hodgson is disappointed Mohamed Al Fayed accused him of "taking advantage" of Fulham but admits he is flattered he "had a bit of a pop".

Al Fayed unhappy with Hodgson

Hodgson left Fulham for Liverpool this summer after saving the club from relegation, guiding them to their best ever league position and then taking them to the Europa League final during his three-year spell, but Al Fayed suggested he owed the club more loyalty.

Hodgson, though, feels the Liverpool offer was something he could not turn down and feels it is unfortunate Al Fayed could not understand why he had to take up the opportunity.

"He didn't want me to leave the club," he said. "He wanted me to stay and he thought that that's what I should do. I was unable to persuade him that a chance to manage Liverpool Football Club is a bit special and unfortunately, even though I enjoyed my time at Fulham and loved being at Fulham, it was something I wanted to do.

"I couldn't persuade him in that so unfortunately I couldn't expect too much from him in terms of his comments. I'm a bit disappointed that the excellent relationship I had with Mohamed Al Fayed has taken a knock back because of my decision but I can only thank him for the two-and-a-half years [at Fulham].

"It was good working with him. He was an excellent chairman to work with and it would have been nice if he had said some nice things about me but if he didn't then I have to take it on the chin.

"The supporters of Fulham, the players and the staff understood my decision because they understood that, when you get an offer to come to Liverpool, it's not an offer you turn down lightly. It's an offer that not many people get so when it comes your way you take it and it's certainly no reflection on where you've been before."

He added: "I suppose in some ways I would've been a bit disappointed if he had said, 'Well, we didn't want him anyway, he can go', so the fact that he's had a bit of a pop at me is more flattering than if he had shrugged his shoulders and said, 'Who cares anyway?'."
