Five reasons why Koeman failed

Sunderland make Hart offer

Sunderland have made a loan bid for Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Hart, 23, spent last season on loan at Birmingham but Roberto Mancini is keen to keep the player at Eastlands to provide competition for Shay Given.

Mancini said last week: "Joe Hart will be the first-choice goalkeeper for England for the next ten years, but I do not know which goalkeeper will be my first choice next season."

However, Hart said this weekend that "sitting on the bench doesn't really interest me" as he looks to further his development and press his England claims, and Steve Bruce has now confirmed he has made an approach to take him to the Stadium of Light.

"We've asked the question of City and we now just have to wait and see what they say, but the timetable is not up to us on when we get an answer," Bruce told the Sunderland Echo. "It's up to them.

"With these new 25-man squad rules, clubs don't have to name their confirmed squads until the end of August, so if they wanted to, City could delay any decisions on their squad until then."

Sunderland No. 1 Craig Gordon is currently out injured with a fractured wrist and is not expected to return until around November.
