Hammers sign Pompey defender Ben Haim

West Ham United have confirmed the signing of Israel defender Tal Ben Haim on loan from Portsmouth until January and claim a World Cup international will follow.

• Blog: West Ham's new recruits

Ben Haim, 28, becomes the Hammers fourth new recruit of the summer, joining midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger, winger Pablo Barrera and forward Frederic Piquionne at Upton Park.

The former Chelsea defender is reunited with manager Avram Grant who worked with the Ben Haim at Stamford Bridge and Portsmouth.

"He is an experienced centre-back with a strong character. He can play across the back four and will provide top-level competition for the club's existing defenders," the club said on their website.

The Hammers also claimed club officials were working towards completing a deal for a fifth summer signing in the next 72 hours but would not reveal who that target was.

"The potential recruit is a young international, who represented his country with distinction at the 2010 FIFA World Cup," the Hammers said.
