Ambitious Sage targets Champions League

Perth Glory owner Tony Sage believes it's time to see some return on his investment, targeting no less than the Asian Champions League crown at the club's season launch on Thursday night.

Sage and coach David Mitchell have assembled one of the strongest squads in the A-League ahead of the upcoming campaign, with marquee recruit Robbie Fowler the cherry on top of what was already a group capable of challenging for honours.

Speaking at Burswood Entertainment Complex, Sage sent out a warning to rival clubs by outlining his ambitious plans for domestic and continental domination.

"I think we've got a very good team off the field now, and a very good team on the field. Yes, it's cost a lot of money. I don't bitch about it, that's what you have to do if you want to win. So I'm more than happy to do that to get the Premiership back to Perth and my aim is obviously to do that. And go one step further, and I've always said it, to hold that Asian Champions League trophy. No club's done it so far, and I want to be the first in Australia to do that."

Fowler has joined the club under the FFA's new foreign marquee rule, with Australian marquee Mile Sterjovski also still able to sit outside the salary cap. Michael Baird and Josh Mitchell have also joined after returning from Romania, and Fowler was struggling to remain diplomatic with his predictions for the season ahead, which kicks off next Thursday.

"I think on paper we're as good as any squad out there," Fowler said. "On paper, yeah, we should be finishing right up at the top of the table. But to give the clichéd answer, let's just get to the finals first and take it from there."

Meanwhile, Glory have announced Australian rugby league legend Benny Elias has joined their board.
